La Lupita Brings Rock With Style to Anaheim

The Mexico City band La Lupita--a highly stylized package of funk, grunge, nortenas, mambo and a little disco--will make a much anticipated Southland appearance at J.C. Fandango on Sunday. .
The quintet’s frantic, humorous brand of rock en espanol works around co-singers Hector Quijada’s deep, seductive voice and Rosa Adame’s sensual, melodic rantings.
Their electrifying performance in December at the Universal Amphitheatre during La Banda Elastica magazine’s anniversary party showed why La Lupita is poised to become one of Latin America’s most important bands.
Adame’s and Quijada’s frenzied stage antics highlighted the funky modern-rock tremors produced by fellow band members Lino Nava on guitar, Poncho Toledo on bass and Bola Domene on drums.
Only recently has La Lupita (a name connoting Mexico’s patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe) surfaced from Mexico City’s underground scene. After limited attention for its first two albums, La Lupita’s third release on the BMG Culebra label, “Tres D” (Three D), has received widespread critical acclaim for its originality.
La Lupita has a knack for fusing traditional sounds, such as rhythmic flamenco guitars with the snapping bounce of a funky bass and tropical-flavored percussion. Funny lyrics about desire and revenge make for tightly packed sound.
* La Lupita performs Sunday at J.C. Fandango, 1086 N. State College Blvd., Anaheim. 9 p.m. $20. (714) 758-1057.
