Vibrating Signal Helps Pedestrians See Light

Orange County’s first traffic signal designed to help pedestrians with failing eyesight cross streets has been installed at the entrance to Regents Point, a community for senior citizens.
The Tactile Pedestrian Adaptor replaces the street-crossing signal with a large, three-dimensional arrow that points in which direction pedestrians can safely cross at Harvard and California avenues.
The arrow vibrates during the normal “walk” time, indicating that it is safe to proceed. Users can touch the arrow as they wait for the green light.
The $374 device makes a low buzzing sound but is not audible at a distance.
