Joe DeVito has been appointed mayor for the third time, replacing Steve Olsen in the largely ceremonial yearlong post.
DeVito had been mayor pro tem and was replaced in that position by Councilwoman Nina Shelley.
The title of mayor rotates among the five-member council on an annual basis with the deputy mayor routinely being named as the city’s top elected official the following year.
However, Shelley has said she does not intend to run again when her fourth four-year term expires in November 1998. Shelley was elected to office in 1982.
Ojai’s mayor runs council meetings and represents the city at various functions.
DeVito joined the City Council in 1986 and was previously named mayor in 1989 and 1994.
