Versace Empire Wins Libel Damages

The fashion empire of the late Gianni Versace accepted damages stemming from stories in two newspapers alleging the company was involved with the Mafia, money laundering and other shady business practices. The editors of the Independent and the Observer, along with the reporters who wrote the stories, also appeared in court to read statements of apology. Both articles were published shortly after Versace was shot to death in July.
