Motorola to Build $3-Billion Chip Plant in Va.

Motorola Inc. said it will revive dormant plans to build a $3-billion computer chip-manufacturing complex near Richmond, Va., doubling its size to anchor the research, development and production of the company’s next generation of semiconductor products. The facility marks Motorola’s largest single capital investment ever and one of the biggest economic prizes won by Virginia in its push to become a home for technology companies. The project will create 2,500 jobs on a five-building, 1.5-million-square-foot campus by 1999, Motorola said. Production of chips is scheduled to begin in 2000. Shares of Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola rose $1.13 to close at $64.75 on the New York Stock Exchange.
