In Freeway League Preview, Sonora Stops Troy

Sonora and Troy, which are expected to challenge for the Freeway League boys’ basketball title, got an early look at each other during the second round of the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic. The Raiders were better this time, beating Troy, 59-56, Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.
Sonora, ranked fifth in the county, outscored the Highlanders, 33-24, in the second half. Jeffrey Berokoff scored 28 points and Marqui Worthy had 20 for the Raiders, who will play Newport Harbor in Friday’s semifinals.
Troy (1-1) had five players foul out and shot 15 free throws to Sonora’s 35.
In another second-round game:
Newport Harbor 78, Pacifica 69--Newport Harbor scored 24 points in the first quarter to take an early 12-point lead and held on for the quarterfinal victory.
Scott Archbold led the Sailors with 24 points. Dustin Illingworth added 14 points and eight rebounds. Matt Jameson scored 12 points and nine assists for Newport Harbor (2-0). Adam Ruchlin led Pacifica (1-1) with 18 points.
In the Bolsa Grande tournament:
Katella 55, Whittier Christian 42--Don Carey had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Katella (2-0), which outscored Whittier Christian, 20-8, in the fourth quarter.
In the Los Angeles Loyola tip-off classic:
Trabuco Hills 73, Thousand Oaks 63--Ryan Webster scored 26 points and Brandon Martin added 13 to lead Trabuco Hills (2-0). Evan Fields added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
In the Mission Viejo Diablo Inferno:
El Toro 60, Oceanside 55--Mark Wulfemeyer had 22 points and Nick Robertson added 12 and grabbed seven rebounds to lead El Toro (3-0).
Laguna Hills 82, Alhambra Keppel 61--Bill Rietkirk scored 17 points for Laguna Hills in its victory over Alhambra Keppel.
In the National Sports Grill tournament:
Santa Margarita 74, Lakewood 48--T.J. Williams scored 25 points and Ryan Forehan-Kelly had 18 for top-ranked Santa Margarita (2-0) in the second-round game. The Eagles play Villa Park in today’s semifinal.
Villa Park 63, Loara 53--Alan Verzani scored 26 points for Villa Park in its second-round victory.
In nonleague boys’ basketball:
Santiago 57, Santa Ana 55 (OT)--Aris Lindo hit the winner with 26 seconds left in overtime after Santa Ana had to give up the ball because of a foul on an offensive rebound.
In the Century Lady Centurion girls’ basketball tournament:
Century 66, Sunny Hills 36--Junior Aprile Powell scored 32 points, including 25 in the first half, and grabbed 16 rebounds for Century (1-0) in the pool play game.
Sonora 60, Santa Ana Valley 32--Brandi Davis scored 19 and Sarah Fister added 16 in the pool play victory for Sonora (2-0), which led, 33-20, at the half.
In the Fullerton Tip-Off Classic:
Fullerton 56, Garden Grove 47--Shannon Hoerner led Fullerton (1-0) with 15 points, scoring on five three-pointers. Fullerton led, 29-19, at the half. Gloria Rojas scored 13 points to lead Garden Grove (0-1).
Loara 59, Santiago 42--Jessica Miles scored 18 points, Carrie Banister scored 16, including four three-pointers and Shawnna Walker added 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Loara (3-0).
In the Hacienda Heights Wilson tournament:
El Dorado 82, Whittier Christian 26--Senior Stephanie Patten had 27 points and Jenny Bluth had 15 rebounds for El Dorado.
In the Irvine tournament:
Foothill 48, Tustin 39--Rebekah Cole scored 14 points and freshmen Kristen Mann had 11 points and 11 rebounds for Foothill (1-0) in the first-round game.
In nonleague basketball:
Cypress 74, Anaheim 32--Lindsay Weaver scored 26 points, including 15 on three-pointers, for Cypress (1-0), which led, 41-15, at the half.
Mission Viejo 56, Huntington Beach 47--Geneva Kelly had 19 points, including five three-pointers, for visiting Mission Viejo (1-0).
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Corona del Mar 2, University 1--Ralph Hermens and Cameron Crandell scored in the first half for Corona del Mar (1-0-1). Mike Coons scored for University (0-1-1).
El Modena 0, Rialto Eisenhower 0--Goalkeeper Sergio Viera had two saves for El Modena in its opening-season tie with visiting Rialto Eisenhower.
Estancia 3, El Toro 2--Jose Quintana scored two goals for Estancia in its victory over host El Toro.
Foothill 1, El Dorado 0--Matt Ledford scored in the 27th minute for Foothill in its victory over El Dorado.
Irvine 2, Aliso Niguel 1--Matt Taylor scored midway through the second half to break a 1-1 tie for Irvine (1-0-1). Eric Kim scored in the first half for the Vaqueros.
La Habra 2, Whittier California 1--Sergio Ramirez scored both goals for La Habra (1-0) and Jeff Meyers was credited with both assists. Alfredo Barrosso had four saves for the Highlanders.
Los Alamitos 5, Cerritos Gahr 0--Jared Eckardt and Tim Willemse each had two goals for Los Alamitos (1-0). Justin Waldrop had three assists for the Griffins.
Orange 4, Huntington 0--Alex Garcia and Jose Velasquez scored two goals apiece for Orange in its victory over Huntington Beach.
Saddleback 7, Santiago 0--Saddleback center-forward Tomas Serna scored five goals in the victory over Santiago (0-1). The Roadrunners are 2-0.
San Clemente 2, Laguna Hills 0--Bryce Sebastian and Adam Miederhoff of San Clemente scored one goal each in its season opening victory over Laguna Hills.
Santa Ana 4, Marina 1--Santa Ana goalkeeper Jose Hernandez had three saves in the victory over Marina.
Sunny Hills 3, Loara 0--Danny Crosley scored two goals and Bryan Broschak added the other for Sunny Hills in its victory over Loara (0-1-1). Sunny Hills is 1-1-0.
Tustin 7, Bolsa Grande 4--Philip Cardenas and Jorge Gonzales scored twice for Tustin, which had not won a game in two years.
Westminster 2, Long Beach Poly 2--Long Beach Poly’s Gregg Schroeder scored with seven minutes remaining to tie the game. Manuel Hernandez and Edson Peralta scored for Westminster in its season opener.
Woodbridge 2, Mission Viejo 0--Yigal Kerszenbaum scored two goals for host Woodbridge (1-0).
In nonleague girls’ water polo:
El Toro 9, Laguna Hills 0--El Toro goalkeeper Crystel Smith scored a rare goal in the first quarter on a length-of-the-pool shot. El Toro is 1-0.
Foothill 10, Mission Viejo 4--Daylene Coberly scored four goals and Teresa Gorbett had three for Foothill (1-0).
