Flooded Field Cancels Moorpark Bowl Game

SANTA BARBARA — The Western State Conference Bowl football game, matching Southern Division co-champion Moorpark College and Santa Barbara, was canceled Saturday afternoon because of poor field conditions.
About one quarter of the field, extending from end zone to end zone, was under water because of overnight rain.
The west side of La Playa Stadium made a pond for the approximately 15 sea gulls that were swimming in it.
In addition, the lower parking lot, which was closed off, was partially filled with mud and debris.
“Our kids were very disappointed. We really wanted to play the game,” Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner said. “But it’s a part of our crazy season, a lot of ups and downs.
According to Bittner, the game was still scheduled to be played as of 8 a.m. Saturday.
Whether the game will be rescheduled will be up to the athletic directors of both schools and Western State Conference officials.
Bittner said it would be unlikely.
Moorpark lost to Santa Barbara, 38-20, on Oct. 11 at Moorpark. Both teams are 6-4.
