Study of Cargo Flights at El Toro Irks Wilson

Supervisor Thomas W. Wilson blasted county staffers Tuesday for analyzing the possible use of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station by private cargo airlines, saying such “joint-use” is forbidden by federal law.
The county this week issued a report on the question of whether cargo airlines could use El Toro as military flights are reduced, but before the Marines leave completely. Wilson argued that federal law and Marine opposition would have to change first.
Supervisor Charles V. Smith countered that laws can change and that cargo use could be acceptable to the Marine Corps if certain safety issues are addressed. “The staff has done exactly what they were directed to do,” he said.
