Council to Consider New Recycling Plan

To meet a state deadline to recycle 50% of all garbage by 2000, the City Council is expected to discuss a plan at its meeting today to separate trash, recyclables and green waste.
The city recycles about 22% of its waste. But City Manager Kenneth Frank said residents are not required to separate trash from yard clippings and other green waste, which make up about 30% of the residential waste. Separating the two types of solid waste would greatly reduce the amount of trash being sent to landfills, he said.
The council also will consider a proposal by the city’s trash hauler, Waste Management of Orange County, to increase garbage pickup costs from $6.13 per housing unit to $12.13 for the expanded recycling program.
The council is not expected to reach a final decision on the issue at the meeting, which will be at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers.
