MIAMI — Ten Haitian seamen were airlifted to safety Tuesday after their freighter, the Gonave Express, began taking on water in rough seas southeast of Miami, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Two Coast Guard helicopters lifted the crew one at a time from the sinking vessel in seas heaving up to 10 feet high and winds blowing at 35 mph about 55 miles southeast of Miami. The Haitian crewmen were flown to Miami.
The freighter was afloat but almost completely underneath the water’s surface, Coast Guard spokesman Mark Mackowiak said.
