Check Out Marine Mammals on Cruise

A nautical new year will kick off Jan. 3 with a marine mammal cruise at the Orange County Marine Institute in Dana Point.
The institute’s scientific research vessel will take to the waters, looking for whales and sea lions from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
“We’ll do things like use a net to collect plankton to show what whales eat,” said Harry Helling, vice president of science programs at the institute. “We’ll show various parts of the whale to show how they have adapted to water, how they communicate and breathe.
“On these cruises, we use our teaching staff, who all have degrees in marine science,” he said.
The institute is at 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive. The mammal cruise costs $18 for adults and $12 for children. Information: (714) 496-2274.
