Authorities are investigating the Christmas Day shooting of an apparently unarmed man by a veteran police officer who had previously fired at suspects eight times. William Whitfield, 22, was shot in the chest in a Brooklyn grocery store while being chased by officers who believed he had fired shots from a building rooftop. Police found no weapon on or near his body. Officer Michael Davitt, 36, shot Whitfield once in the chest after he refused an order to stop and drop what he was carrying, authorities said. The object turned out to be keys on a long strap.
