The airlines, enjoying their best run since the advent of deregulation two decades ago, will extend their profitable ways into early 1998. But any slowdown in the U.S. economy or rising fuel prices could snap the earnings gains. Among the railroads, pressure will be on Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe to put their merger-related problems behind them or face critics’ calls for renewed government regulation.
