Drink Responsibly Over the Holidays

* When approximately two in every five Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related automobile crash, it’s imperative that this holiday season we all understand the issues surrounding holiday celebrations and alcohol consumption.

Practicing responsible beverage service and being a responsible guest are two examples of how everyone can help in the battle against alcohol-related problems and fatalities.

Responsible beverage service is one strategy that has proved effective in reducing alcohol-related problems within licensed establishments, improving hospitality in communities, and complementing community and law enforcement efforts.

Practicing responsible beverage service can help in the reduction of illegal alcohol service to minors, the number of single-vehicle nighttime crashes, and the number of DUIs coming from alcohol licensed establishments and private parties.

Responsibility is the key to prevention. If you are a guest at an event and you plan to drink, plan ahead and designate a driver for the entire evening.

At the party, pace your drinking and eat protein-rich foods. Salty foods such as chips, peanuts and pretzels may cause increased thirst resulting in quicker drinking and more alcohol consumption. As a guest, it’s important you know when to say no. Knowing when to stop your alcohol consumption is not a sign of weakness or boredom, but a sign of responsibility.
