Junkyard Fire Does Minimal Damage

NORTHRIDGE — A small fire at a junkyard Saturday morning did little damage but sent up a plume of thick black smoke that could be seen for miles.
Los Angeles city firefighters put out the blaze at Northridge Auto Wreckers at 18959 Parthenia St. around 10 a.m. but stayed on the scene several hours to monitor smoldering cars and tires, officials said.
Larry Ready, president of the company, said a worker accidentally ignited the blaze while removing a part from a car with a blowtorch. There were no injuries. About six automobiles burned.
“It sure did make a lot of smoke,” Ready said. “You’d think the whole of Northridge was on fire.”
