Sandy Vessey-Schneider, a Long Beach State graduate, will be the school’s women’s water polo coach, 49er Athletic Director Bill Shumard said. Vessey-Schneider, who was goalie coach for the U.S. national team last year, played on the national team from 1984-94 and took part in the women’s exhibition game at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
Garden Grove’s May Mangkalakiri has reached the semifinals in three divisions--under-14 girls’ singles, under-14 girls’ doubles and under-14 mixed doubles--of the Junior National Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club. Placentia’s Mike Chansawangpuvna teamed with Mangkalakiri in the mixed doubles. Mangkalakiri’s brother, Nick Mangkalakiri, advanced to the semifinals of the under-12 boys’ doubles division and Panita Phongasavithas, of Anaheim Hills, advanced to the semifinals in the girls’ under-12 doubles.
