South Coast Repertory has slated a new comedy, “Freedomland,” by Amy Freed, to fill the second slot in its 1997-98 Mainstage season, completing the schedule of six subscription offerings. The world-premiere production, to run Oct. 10 to Nov. 16, will be directed by SCR Producing Artist Director David Emmes.
“Freedomland” was commissioned by the Costa Mesa theater. The script had a staged reading in June on the SCR Mainstage. A theater spokesman describes the play as an “insane comedy about an American family in free-fall from grace.”
Freed has also written “Still Warm,” “Claustrophilia” and “The Psychic Life of Savages,” which has won several major drama prizes.
MORE ‘DINNER’ DATES: The Laguna Playhouse’s “Don’t Dress for Dinner” has been extended to Aug. 3. Additional performances are Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 2 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. The show, at the Moulton Theater in Laguna Beach, had been scheduled to close July 27. (714) 497-2787.
