City Halts Building of Cellular Towers

Seeking to prevent cellular antennas from sprouting throughout the city, officials have approved a 45-day moratorium on the construction of new wireless communication towers.
Like cities throughout Southern California, Oxnard is trying to balance the growing use of cellular phones with the desire to prevent antennas from marring scenic landscapes.
In Ventura County, Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks have already approved ordinances to cut down on such visual pollution. County officials have drafted similar guidelines requiring phone companies to put in landscaping to hide cellular towers.
In Oxnard, the moratorium will give planners time to draw up a cellular tower ordinance. A city report states that in recent months, officials have seen an increase in requests to install towers and roof antennas.
Council members approved the moratorium by a 5-0 vote Tuesday night.
