Anchor Tom Brokaw to Sign 5-Year Pact With NBC News

NEW YORK — NBC anchor Tom Brokaw is expected to sign a new five-year contract with NBC News for an estimated $7 million annually, sources said Monday. The deal--expected to be signed later this week--would end a bid by CNN to sign Brokaw, 57, to the cable news network. Sources said CNN made a similar monetary offer to Brokaw to be its on-air leader, anchoring a prime-time newsmagazine and other news programming. Brokaw is a friend of CNN founder Ted Turner, and CNN President Tom Johnson has made no secret of his desire to woo the high-profile Brokaw to CNN. But NBC sources said Brokaw would stay at NBC, where he anchors the top-rated “NBC Nightly News” and plays a major role at the network.
