City Pays $100,000 for Hotel to Maintain Piece of History

Fearful of losing a vital piece of their history, city officials have purchased the dilapidated Stage Hotel for $100,000.
Now, they have to figure out what to do with it.
Built during the 1880s gold rush, the hotel was the stagecoach stop for travelers from Newport Beach to Los Angeles. The two-story building at 6601 Beach Blvd. eventually went into decline, and the city’s Redevelopment Agency decided to buy it when the last owner filed for bankruptcy protection.
The City Council voted 4 to 1 this week to find a consulting firm to figure out how the city can use the building and retain its historical features.
Councilman Jerry Sigler, who dissented, said the city should figure out the use first and start hiring consultants later.
“Is the city going to become a landlord now?” he asked.
But others argued that an expert can give them the widest range of possibilities.
