Hearts Open for Mistreated Puppies

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

More than 2,000 people have offered to adopt 97 puppies that were discovered--dirty, hungry, cold and jammed into filthy cages--inside a truck that slammed into a railroad overpass near Bridgeport, Conn., three weeks ago. Four of the dogs have died since the accident. The puppies were being transported along the East Coast for a broker who planned to sell them to pet shops. Anger over the condition of the animals has been directed at the driver of the truck and Superior Pets Inc., based in Elkland, Mo., which has agreed to turn over custody of the dogs to the Humane Society.
