Playing the Percentages

City Section teams are often maligned for the lack of a quality passing game. But at least four Northwest Valley Conference quarterbacks are doing something right.

Seniors Aaron Fredette of El Camino Real, Scott Doherty of Birmingham and Sean Atkins of San Fernando and junior Steve Alvarado of Taft have combined to throw 47 touchdowns while having just seven passes intercepted. All four have a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 5-1 or better.

Only two Southern Section quarterbacks, Peter Dirksen of L.A. Baptist and Steve DeMartinis of Notre Dame, can claim similar success.

“Sean and I can run so we don’t have to throw a bad pass,” Fredette said. “And Steve and Scott are better at throwing the ball away so it doesn’t get picked off.”
