Senate Confirms 4 Diplomat Nominees

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Monday approved four of President Clinton’s nominees for diplomatic jobs, including his choice of a White House speech writer for a post in the Central American nation of Belize.
Clinton nominated Carolyn Curiel in August to be ambassador to Belize. Curiel, from Hammond, Ind., joined the administration as a speech writer in 1993, focusing on domestic issues.
Stan McLelland of San Antonio was cleared to become ambassador to Jamaica. He is executive vice president of Valero Energy Corp.
The Senate also approved Timothy Michael Carney of Washington as ambassador to Haiti and Donna Jean Hrinak of Virginia to become ambassador to Bolivia.
