In Betty Wyman’s defense of City Councilman Mike Hernandez (Commentary, Nov. 6), she completely ignores the fact that Hernandez was caught and arrested. If this had not happened he probably would still be “using.”
If he had entered himself into a rehab program, as she implies, without first being caught, I believe people would have been more understanding and forgiving.

* Please thank Bill Boyarsky (Nov. 6) for getting to the bottom line. Hernandez needs to get real and accept full responsibility for his shortcomings and stop blaming his mother in her death.
Truly recovering alcoholics do accept full responsibility, nothing less. If he needs to blame somebody or something, then he is still in denial and is probably one of the 95% who relapse.
