Eagles to Go With Hoying

Associated Press

Bobby Hoying will get his first NFL start at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Coach Ray Rhodes said Tuesday he decided to go with the former Ohio State star in the closing minutes of Monday night’s 24-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, which all but eliminated the Eagles (4-6) from playoff contention.

“I want to give this young man a chance to see if he can get things done,” Rhodes said.

Hoying, chosen in the third round of the 1996 draft, was the second quarterback taken that year, behind Michigan State’s Tony Banks, who went to the Rams in the second round and became a starter as a rookie.

Hoying entered Monday’s game with 6:49 left. After missing on three of his first four passes, he led the Eagles to their only touchdown, a six-yard toss to rookie tight end Chad Lewis. Playing with the outcome long since decided and the 49ers coming with a hard pass rush on every play, Hoying finished eight for 14 for 94 yards and was sacked three times.

49er defensive lineman Marvin Washington, one of the team’s key backups, tore a tendon in his right ankle during Monday night’s game and probably will sit out the rest of the season.

Washington, who appeared in 10 games and started one, had six tackles, including a sack, and also saw duty on special teams.

Former Detroit Lion halfback Lloyd Cardwell, 84, died Monday in Omaha after an illness of several weeks. Cardwell played halfback and defensive back for Nebraska from 1934-36 and was a first-round draft pick of the Lions in 1937, when he signed for $250. Twice he was a all-pro selection during his seven years as with Detroit.
