Hearing Set Tonight on Rezoning Plans

Mismatched fencing, paved frontyards, unsightly satellite dishes and secondary dwelling units will be tackled in proposed zoning code changes that will go before the City Council tonight for a public hearing.

Most of the proposed changes have been debated in Planning Commission meetings, but a proposed restriction on some uses of chain-link fencing may rankle some businesses.

An initial proposal outlawed the fencing in neighborhoods, but residents protested that they would be denied a low-cost security measure. The resulting compromise proposal would only prohibit chain-link fences along the parts of commercial properties that can be seen from the street, said Jack McGee, director of the community development department.

The code would mandate that residential fences have a “consistent” appearance and be well-kept. It would restrict the amount of front yards that can be paved.

The meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza, 300 E. Chapman Ave. Information: (714) 744-5500.
