City Seeking Developer to Renew Shopping Center

City leaders say they are running out of patience with the dilapidated condition of the Stanton Plaza Shopping Center.
Councilman David John Shawver said he is urging the city to recruit a developer to buy and renovate the 11-acre Beach Boulevard site.
“The community has run out of patience with the condition of the property,” Shawver said. “It is in the heart of our city, and it does absolutely nothing for our image.”
Shawver met in late October with property owners and Bob Teller, owner of the Orange County Marketplace, to discuss the possibility of developing a farmers market at the plaza.
“Even though everybody was very positive on it, you can’t just put all your eggs in one basket,” Shawver said.
Plaza renovation has been stalled by ongoing legal disputes stemming from the September 1994 fire that destroyed a 99 Cent Only Store, which was not rebuilt.
“We’ve been waiting too long for the owners to get together and do something,” Councilman Harry Dotson said. “We need to move ahead now.”
