SEAL BEACH — A 75-year-old Colorado Springs woman died after a drunk driver broadsided the car she was in, police said Friday.
At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Martha Hilbert and her husband, James Hilbert, 76, were waiting in the left-turn lane on eastbound Westminster Avenue at Kitts Highway to make a U-turn, Police Sgt. Rick Ransdell said.
Kitts Highway is in the middle of the U.S. Naval Weapons Station, about one-eighth of a mile east of Seal Beach Boulevard.
As the Hilberts began their U-turn, a westbound driver failed to stop for the red light and plowed into the passenger side of the Hilberts’ car, Ransdell said.
The driver, Lisa Rains, 34, of Long Beach, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol, he said. She was treated for minor injuries and released from Long Beach Community Hospital.
Rains is being held in Orange County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Martha Hilbert was pronounced dead at Los Alamitos Medical Center, Ransdell said. James Hilbert suffered minor injuries, he said.
