State Grant to Fund Police Gear, Office Jobs

A $126,379 state policing grant up for City Council review today would pay for three employee positions and equipment at the Police Department.
The bulk of the funding, $113,000, will pay for existing positions, Police Chief Elvin G. Miali said. The jobs were funded last year by a similar grant from the Legislature.
The employees take minor crime reports, work the front desk and perform a variety of other duties to free officers, Miali said. “What this does is allow the sworn officer to be out in the field to do patrol and other requirements.”
The grant includes $12,000 that would be used to buy two video cameras for mounting in police cars. The cameras would record police activity and the tapes could be used as evidence.
The council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave. Information: (714) 965-4445.
