Westlake 34, Simi Valley 14--Westlake took advantage of five Simi Valley turnovers and sophomore Zac Wasserman threw three touchdown passes to lift the Warriors (3-2, 2-0) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.
Wasserman completed 12 of 23 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns, including scores of 20 and 31 yards to Joey Cuppari in the second half.
Simi Valley (1-5, 0-2) scored first on a 15-yard pass from Tim Bird to tight end Noah Happe midway through the first quarter. Bird was nine of 20 for 87 yards.
After Westlake scored on a five-yard run by J.R. Ross and a 30-yard pass play from Wasserman to Travis Campbell, Simi Valley took a 14-13 lead with 16 seconds left in the first half on a nine-yard scoring pass from Bird to Eric Cooper.
However, two plays into the third quarter, Westlake’s Jared Kearns recovered a fumble and four plays later the Warriors scored on the 20-yard pass to Cuppari.
Westlake scored twice in the fourth quarter on another five-yard run by Ross and the 31-yard pass to Cuppari, who had five catches for 94 yards to give him an area-high 37 for 616 yards this season.
Happe caught three passes for 49 yards, completed both of his passes for 58 yards, and had two interceptions.
Westlake’s David Hu had two interceptions.
