Execution Urged for Man Who Killed Mother

A Superior Court jury has recommended death for a 39-year-old La Puente man convicted of sodomizing and killing his 68-year-old mother.
Moments after the jury recommended the death penalty for Frank Abilez, he passed a note to Judge Gary Feess asking the judge to perform a wedding ceremony for him and an unidentified woman, Deputy Dist. Atty. Donald Jakubowski said.
“He wants to get married. He sodomizes and murders his mother and he wants to get married,” Jakubowski said. “No remorse whatsoever in this guy.”
Abilez was convicted last week of strangling his mother with a sock and stealing her belongings. Abilez’s cousin, Albert Vierya, was found guilty of second-degree murder and other crimes in the case.
Vierya is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 19. Abilez’s attorney will make a motion for a new trial that day. Sentencing for Abilez has been set for Dec. 4.
