New Law to Cut HUD Rent Subsidies

No longer will the government enable Newark, N.J., landlords to receive $1,032 for an apartment that ordinarily would rent for $784, or Providence, R.I., landlords to take in $956 for a unit they otherwise could rent for only $625. President Clinton is signing legislation to curb rent subsidies the Department of Housing and Urban Development pays on 850,000 apartments occupied by low-income tenants across the country.
