Three-Hit Victory for Cubs’ Clark

Mark Clark became the first Chicago Cub to throw back-to-back complete games in six years--Greg Maddux was the last to do it--as he limited the Cincinnati Reds to three hits in an 8-1 victory Monday night at Cincinnati.

Clark has been superb with the Cubs, going 4-0 in six starts with a 2.84 earned-run average. In his previous start Tuesday, he gave up eight hits in a complete-game, 9-3 victory over Minnesota.

He was even better Monday, striking out six and walking only one batter intentionally. He retired 16 of the last 17 batters.

Philadelphia 13, New York 4--Pinch-hitter Kevin Jordan capped a 15-pitch at-bat in the sixth inning with a two-run double and rookie Scott Rolen drove in three runs as the Phillies won at New York.

It was Philadelphia’s third consecutive victory and seventh in eight games. Rolen reached base five times, scored four runs and hit his 18th homer.

The Mets’ third loss in four games was another blow to their fading playoff hopes.
