During Hollywood’s Golden Era, director John Ford had a repertory company of actors, including John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Ward Bond and Victor McLaglen, that he used frequently in his movies. Orson Welles had his Mercury Players and, more recently, Woody Allen developed a stable of performers who have popped up in many of his films. Television producer Steven Bochco utilizes a similar repertory approach for his series. (See story, page 82.) “You work with certain actors and you really like what they do, you like how they do it and you want to work with them again,” he explains. “So as good roles arise that you think they are right for, you take advantage of your relationship with them.” Indeed, the producer’s three series on the fall prime-time schedule feature a number of recognizable Bochco alumni.
