Brenda Jones, 18, of Yorba Linda, has been named one of two 1997 Gilmore Young Artist Award winners. Jones, a USC freshman, will receive $15,000 toward her studies from the Irvine S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, based in Kalamazoo, Mich. One to four pianists receive the biennial award in a noncompetitive process. The other 1997 recipient is Hsing-ay Hsu of Caldwell, N.J. A winner in the 1994 Los Angeles Center Spotlight Award competition, Jones will receive her award Nov. 7 in Kalamazoo.
The Laguna Playhouse has extended its current show, “Travels With My Aunt,” at the Moulton Theater in Laguna Beach for three weekend performances: Oct. 3 and 4 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. Strong ticket demand prompted the extension. “Weekends for the rest of the run were nearly sold out,” said playhouse executive director Richard Stein, who also directed the production.” Box office: (714) 497-2787.
