Bicycle Owners Warned After Series of Thefts

Sheriff’s deputies urged Marina del Rey residents Monday to secure their bicycles after three recent thefts were added to the list of a dozen that has occurred.

Deputy Perry Tardif of the Marina del Rey sheriff’s station said two beach-cruiser bikes that had been locked under an apartment stairwell in the 4200 block of Via Marina were stolen Sept. 9.

In the early morning of Sept. 10, a mountain bike tied to a boat docked off of Bali Way was stolen while the boat owner was on board. The suspect is a white man about 30 years old, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with a mustache.

Tardif said several bicycles stolen near Via Marina since July were taken from apartment balconies and patios. Some were secured with cable locks, he said.

In one case, a thief used a ladder taken from a construction project to climb to an upper-story balcony and steal an unsecured bike, Tardif said.

He said bike owners should keep bikes indoors or use U-shaped Kryptonite-type locks to deter theft.
