High Court Upholds Districting Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court refused to let North Carolina avoid redrawing a voting district that a lower court said was wrongly created as a safe haven for black candidates. The Supreme Court’s refusal to postpone the order of a federal panel jeopardizes a congressional primary election scheduled for May 5. The case began with a lawsuit in which plaintiffs charged the 12th Congressional District was unconstitutionally designed to elect black candidates. The district meanders through the state, connecting predominantly black towns from Charlotte to Greensboro. The court refused the request in a 6-3 vote.
