The Oxnard Boys & Girls Club received a $150,000 donation Wednesday for its proposed $2.1-million headquarters, the day after city officials endorsed a land lease for the new building.
The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a 65-year lease at a nominal fee for a 28,000-square-foot facility in the Southwest Community Park at Patterson Road and 5th Street.
The Martin V. Smith Youth Center--named after the prominent local businessman who gave $500,000 to kick off the facility’s fund-raising campaign--will include a gym, exercise room and computer learning center.
Smith also played a crucial role in attracting the $150,000 donation from the Hilton Foundation, said Abe Oliveras, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club.
The latest contribution brings the fund-raising campaign to $1.63 million, Oliveras said.
