Boyd, 75, Ex-Football Coach at Pierce, Dies

Jack Boyd, who played football at UCLA and was an assistant coach at Pierce College, died last Friday after a long illness. He was 75.
Boyd played for the Bruins from 1943-45, leading the team in scoring in 1943.
He served as an assistant coach in football and track at Pierce during the 1960s and 1970s.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at Congregational Church of the Chimes in Sherman Oaks.
The City Section Football Kickoff Show will air Monday at 8 p.m. on KLCS channel 58, the Los Angeles Unified School District’s TV station.
The 90-minute program previews all 49 City Section football teams.
The show will be repeated Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. and Sept. 6 at 12:30 p.m.
Donnie Whittemore, who made five of seven field-goal attempts last season for City 4-A finalist Taft, has decided not to play this season because of work commitments.
SOFTBALL
Lisa Kelley, who was an All-Southern Section Division II selection for Hart High in 1994, has been hired as an assistant coach at Nicholls State in Louisiana.
Kelley played for College of the Canyons in 1995 and was a shortstop and center fielder for the University of Michigan from 1996-98.
WATER POLO
Terry Schroeder, who guided Pepperdine to the NCAA men’s championship last season, has been selected as the university’s coach of the year for the 1997-98 school year.
Schroeder, an Olympian and captain of the U.S. National team from 1983-92, led the Waves to their seventh NCAA Division I title with an 8-7 overtime victory over USC in the championship game in December.
