There were no major surprises in the pairings for the first Southern Section girls’ water polo playoffs, which were announced Monday.
Rosary is the top-seeded team in Division III, which begins first-round play today, and three other county teams were seeded in Division I, which begins play Thursday.
Long Beach Wilson (24-0) is top-seeded in Division I with Marina (21-5) second, Capistrano Valley (21-4) third and Los Alamitos (17-9) fourth. Each hosts first-round games.
Wilson won the Irvine Southern California Championships two weekends ago, defeating Marina, 6-4 in overtime, in the final. It is the only time Wilson has been extended to overtime this season.
Century League champion Villa Park (19-6) hosts Esperanza (17-9) in the first round with the winner advancing to face the Wilson-Mater Dei winner. Newport Harbor (18-7), the Sea View League champion, hosts Canyon (17-9) in the first round with the winner advancing to face the Los Alamitos-Mission Viejo winner.
In Division III, Rosary (19-7), which lost its seven games to Division I teams, could meet Magnolia (16-7), the Orange League champion, in the quarterfinals.
Pacific Coast League champ-University (16-9) is seeded second and hosts Valencia (9-7) in the first round today. The winner of that game could meet Katella (8-6), the Empire League champion, in Thursday’s second round.
