LA HABRA — Two former City Council members are among the 16 candidates vying for a post on the five-member panel, City Clerk Sharie L. Apodaca announced Wednesday.
Instead of holding a costly special election, the council decided to appoint someone to fill the seat vacated recently by Councilman David M. Cheverton.
The candidates will be interviewed by the City Council today at 5 p.m. and Friday at 4 p.m. during closed-session meetings at City Hall. The council is expected to name the new member Feb. 26.
The candidates are all La Habra residents: William D. Mahoney and Robin Young, the two former council members; Gary Cherno; Michael Chik; Larry Dobkin; Rose Espinoza; Sam Gellman; Robert D.B. Guerin; Ted Hebert; Thomas Le Clair; John Lindskog; Robert Mahon; Eddie Qader; Salvador Salazar; George Simonian; and Michael Tommer.
The successor will serve until Cheverton’s term ends in November. Cheverton, a longtime councilman, cited increased job responsibilities at an Irvine marketing firm as the reason for his departure.
