Kosovo

Jonathan Clarke’s column (Commentary, Jan. 7) is right on the mark. The spread of ethnic Albanians as illegal immigrants into Kosovo, Greece, Macedonia and Bulgaria runs a parallel with illegal immigration from Mexico into California.
Add to this explosive situation the fact that for Serbs Kosovo is the symbol of their ancient Eastern Orthodox civilization and their centuries-old resistance to Islam.
The most significant geopolitical factor in all of this is that Germany has now extended its economic and political hegemony in the Balkans, which it failed to achieve in two world wars. This is against America’s best interests. The powder keg in the Balkans has not been defused by the Dayton accords. It is time for America to reestablish links with pro-democracy Serbian leaders and the Greeks to forestall further German expansionism through client states such as Croatia and the spread of radical Islam.
