Accident Causes Oil Spill, Closes Part of Freeway

An accident involving a tanker, big rig and a van caused a spill of 3,000 gallons of crude oil on the San Gabriel Freeway in Santa Fe Springs on Monday, forcing the freeway to be closed in both directions.
The crash occurred just after 10 a.m. near Telegraph Road, said California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Shirley Gaines.
The thick, black crude covered hundreds of yards of the freeway, and crews worked to the keep the ooze from entering storm drains, she said.
Southbound lanes reopened at 1 p.m. but the cleanup was expected to keep northbound lanes closed until at least midnight Monday, Gaines said.
