“Madeline” brings to the screen Ludwig Bemelman’s classic series of books about a tiny schoolgirl. Set in Paris, the film, which opens Friday in general release, features Hatty Jones as the title character and Frances McDormand as Miss Clavel, right, along with Nigel Hawthorne as Lord Covington.

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover reunite as L.A. police detectives Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh in “Lethal Weapon 4.” Also returning are Joe Pesci and Rene Russo, joined by Chris Rock and Hong Kong action star Jet Li, who plays an Asian crime lord bent on revenge. It opens wide on Friday.

“Cider House Rules” comes to the stage in a two-part adaptation by

Peter Parnell, conceived and directed by Tom Hulce and Jane Jones. Performed over

two nights or as a mara-

it opens Saturday at the Mark Taper Forum.

What will a period-music specialist make of Mahler? Roger Norrington, best known for his Brahms, tackles the epic turn-of-the-century “Resurrection” Symphony, with the L.A. Philharmonic, vocalists Anna Larsson and Janice Chandler, and the L.A. Master Chorale on Tuesday at Hollywood Bowl.

ART

A series of “Metro-Net” conceptual sculptures create a metaphorical subway system in “Martin Kippenberger, The Last Stop West” opening Thursday at the MAK Center. Geographically displaced, the six simulated subway entrances link Greece, Germany, Dawson City, Yukon, Canada and L.A.

POP MUSIC

After playing only a handful of shows in recent years, Pearl Jam declared a truce in its dispute with Ticketmaster over ticket surcharges and took to the road for a full-scale U.S. tour. Led by Eddie Vedder, above, the band plays Friday at Cox Arena in San Diego and July 13-14 at the Great Western Forum.

JAZZ

All summer, the Jazz Bakery is giving Mort Sahl room to vent Wednesdays through Sundays, pairing him with an assortment of musicians. Pianist and NPR host Marian McPartland joins Sahl this Wednesday through Friday; next week, trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison shares the stage.

VIDEO

Audiences and the Academy had a lot of good will for the hit “Good Will Hunting.” Stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck won the Oscar for their original screenplay about a troubled math genius, and Robin Williams picked up an Oscar for his turn as a psychologist. The film makes its video bow Tuesday.
