Oakland Police Official Named City’s New Chief

Oakland Deputy Police Chief Fred Sanchez will become Pomona’s police chief Sept. 14, the city manager said Tuesday.
Sanchez, 47, became the Oakland department’s first Latino deputy chief in April. In Pomona, he will succeed Chief Richard Shaurette, who is retiring.
City Manager Severo Esquivel said he chose Sanchez from more than 40 applicants, with the aid of a selection panel.
“I believe [Sanchez] has years of valuable experience with a strong background in community policing and community relations,” Esquivel said. “He’ll change the way we do policing here.”
Sanchez oversees Oakland’s Bureau of Investigations, a division responsible for probes of homicides, serious crimes and internal affairs. He was also one of the architects of Oakland’s community policing plan and its bilingual program.
“My years of experience in a diverse community on overseeing everything from patrol to investigation will serve me well,” Sanchez said from Oakland.
