Cypress 7-8, Cuesta 0-3--The 15th-seeded Chargers pulled the surprise of the playoffs, sweeping a pair from No. 2 and host Cuesta.
Steve Smyth (9-2) pitched a complete game and struck out 10 in the first game and Jeff Schultz (7-7) pitched an eight-hitter in the second game. Smyth, a freshman left-hander, has struck out 24 in the last 16 1/3 innings.
“I’ve had a few days like this and they are good days,” Cypress Coach Scott Pickler said. “Our pitching was outstanding today.”
Brandon Smith hit two home runs and had four RBIs in the first game for Cypress (24-21), the defending state champion.
Brandon Pack was two for three with three RBIs. In the second game, Pack and Gabe Gerhardt each hit two-run homers. Cuesta ends 34-8.
Santa Ana 14, San Bernardino Valley 6--Cory Williams had four hits and drove in two runs and Boa Vinh had four hits and scored twice as Santa Ana (31-13) advanced to the second round for the 11th consecutive year.
Los Angeles Harbor is the only other team to make it to the second round the last 11 seasons.
Michael Natale (10-2) gave up seven hits in seven innings for the victory.
