An Oxnard man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder Thursday after a gun he was holding discharged a bullet into his wife’s bed.
Ismael Zavala-Cornojo repeatedly kicked his wife and threatened to kill her during the 2:30 a.m. incident in the 2000 block of Geneva Way, said Oxnard Police Sgt. Lee Wilcox. “The gun went off during a struggle and it looks like the victim may have been in bed,” Wilcox said. “We’re very lucky no one was shot.”
Zavala-Cornojo, 51, apparently wanted to take photos of his wife and her boyfriend as evidence for a custody dispute, Wilcox said. But when he found the couple in bed he pointed the gun at them and said he would shoot, Wilcox said.
The .22-caliber revolver went off as the boyfriend and Zavala-Cornojo’s 18-year-old son-in-law, who also lives at the house, were wrestling it away from the suspect, Wilcox said. No one was injured, Wilcox said.
Police surrounded the home and ordered the suspect and occupants to come out, said Oxnard Officer Felice Epps. Also sleeping inside the home were the suspect’s 16-year-old daughter, 11-year-old son and 8-month-old granddaughter, Wilcox said.
Police booked Zavala-Cornojo on suspicion of attempted murder and felony corporal injury to a spouse. He was being held Thursday night in lieu of $250,000 bail.
