OXNARD — Two women talking on a sidewalk at 5th and Meta streets in east Oxnard accidentally stepped into the path of a car and were seriously injured Saturday, fire officials said.
The 9 p.m. accident was initially reported to have involved only one victim, but firefighters called for backup after finding the two women, who were not identified, suffering from head injuries, fractured bones and internal bleeding, Capt. George Todd of the Oxnard Fire Department said.
“The impact of the collision caused them to be thrown between 20 and 30 feet,” Todd said.
The women were taken by ambulance to St. John’s Hospital in Oxnard. Their conditions were not immediately available.
The driver of the compact car that struck the women was not identified. He was apparently on his way to work when the crash occurred, Todd said.
Several Oxnard Police Department officers were dispatched to reroute traffic.
