Meeting to Discuss Class on Police Work
Anyone interested in volunteering with the Newport Beach Police Department, or just curious about police work in general, might want to attend Wednesday’s Speak Up Newport meeting.
Department officials will talk about the newly formed Citizens Police Academy, in which residents can get a glimpse of law enforcement.
The 12-week course includes drug-dog demonstrations, classes on the judicial process and an officer’s-eye view of a traffic stop.
The department hopes anyone interested enough in the academy will join its volunteer program, whose participants perform home-safety and vacation checks, give safety lectures and handle other jobs to free uniformed officers for other duties.
In addition, business and community members who attend the Speak Up Newport meeting can ask about personal safety and other crime issues.
The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Cannery Restaurant, 3010 Lafayette Ave.
Information: (949) 224-2266.
