An Oxnard police officer broke his finger trying to collar a suspected shoplifter, authorities said Saturday.
Charles Gregory Edwards, 27, of Oxnard allegedly stole a bottle of liquor from the Albertson’s grocery store at 450 S. Ventura Road about 6:30 p.m. Friday, police said.
When Officer Ron Zavala responded, he attempted to detain Edwards by grabbing his shirt. As Edwards twisted away from Zavala to flee, the officer’s hand was caught in Edwards’ shirt, breaking Zavala’s finger.
When Officer Martin Ennis and his police dog arrived to assist Zavala, Edwards surrendered.
Edwards is being held on suspicion of petty theft and resisting arrest.
